Kogarah Bay Creek Floodplain Risk Management Plan

Kogarah Bay Creek is a 2.8 km2 catchment which drains into Kogarah Bay forming part of the Georges River estuary feeding into Botany Bay (Figure 1). It is one of the largest catchments in the Kogarah Council municipality and has the greatest number of reported flooding incidents. The catchment area is predominantly occupied by urban development, including both residential (low and high density) and commercial/light industrial.

Catchment Description

The catchment (Figure 1) has two open channel tributaries between the Princes Highway and Blakesley Road. The West Street branch which runs between Planthurst Road and West Street, and the Woniora Road branch which runs between Woniora Road and approximately 100m downstream of West Street. Upstream of Blakesley Road there is no open channel system and the creek is piped with any overland flow travelling through private property and along roads.

There are several pipe footbridges and three road crossings over the open channel sections, at West Street, Princes Highway and Carlton Crescent. Carlton Crescent is situated at the downstream end of the study area, adjacent to Kogarah Bay. From the outlet upstream to the Princes Highway there are significant areas of open space adjacent to the lined channel. Immediately upstream of the Princes Highway the floodplain becomes more restricted and is fringed by Blakehurst High School and residential/commercial developments. For all of its length upstream of the Princes Highway the floodplain extends into private property and several properties have been inundated by floodwaters in the past.
