This training manual contains notes which were originally prepared for a training course for the Department's Bridge Design Engineers which was held in 1974-75. The aims of the course were to promote a general awareness of Departmental policies and pro- cedures, to demonstrate and discuss various design methods and to achieve uniformity in design and a high standard of completed work. The notes have been prepared in two volumes. Volume 1 (Parts A -D) covers Departmental administrative procedures and general technical aspects of bridge design and maintenance. Volume 2 (Part E) covers, in detail, methods of bridge design for reference by Engineers in their day-to-day design work.
