Animal Vehicle Strike

This combined dataset brings together animal vehicle strike information from multiple sources to provide a more comprehensive view of animal–vehicle interactions across New South Wales from 2021 onwards.

The core dataset is derived from NSW BioNet, the official repository for biodiversity data products managed by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. BioNet supports improved biodiversity outcomes by enabling the community and government to proactively manage and enhance biodiversity through comprehensive, credible, and robust data and information. Within BioNet, animal vehicle strike observations are defined as records classified as road injured, road kill, or wildlife rehabilitator reports indicating a collision or collision with a motor vehicle.

To enhance coverage and completeness, the dataset has been supplemented with the addition of:

  • Transport crash data involving animals – all NSW
  • Road maintenance crew data – certain State roads only
  • iNaturalist data – all of NSW where citizen scientists are active
  • IFAW report a dead animal data – all of NSW where IFAW app is used

Please refer to the metadata documentation for comprehensive information about this dataset.
