Law and Order

Law and order is a broad group of functions aimed at regulating and protecting society. It encompasses the preparation, enactment and enforcement of statutes, law reform, the maintenance of civil order, detection of crime, apprehension of criminals and the civil and criminal court systems. The punishment and rehabilitation of offenders is a significant element of Law and Order, including the provision of secure corrective institutions and the supervision of non custodial sentences.

Law and order encompasses making justice available to all through such measures as legal aid, the provision of legal advice, and supporting the victims of crime. It includes institutions such as parliamentary inquiries, royal commissions, and inquiries into public sector activities and corruption. Law and Order also involves protecting the physical safety of all members of society through organisations providing fire and emergency services.
