  • Updated description of Voluntary school contributions and subject contributions (2014-2023) from

Principals can request voluntary school contributions and subject contributions to enhance their school education programs. It is a decision for parents/carers to make payments. **Data Notes:** * There is no charge for students to complete the minimum requirements of the school curriculum. All schools can ask for voluntary contributions from parents to enhance the educational programs they are providing (as shown in the ‘general contributions’ section). * Schools which have voluntary contributions collected through their Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) may have their general contribution listed as zero. * The level of voluntary contributions is determined by the principal in consultation with the school community as part of the Department of Education Code of Practice which is a part of the [Voluntary School Contributions policy](https://education.nsw.gov.au/policy-library/policies/voluntary-school-contribution "Voluntary School Contributions policy "). Principals must ensure that no student or family suffers any discrimination or embarrassment if they do not make a voluntary contribution. Confidentiality, privacy and dignity must always be maintained in relation to voluntary contributions. * Schools may charge for elective subjects that go beyond the minimum requirements of the curriculum (as shown in the ‘subject contributions’ section). The principal determines the level of subject contributions in consultation with the school community as part of the school budgetary process. * Parents who are unable to pay for elective subjects because of financial hardship may be eligible for assistance from the school. Parents wishing to access these funds should contact the principal, as these funds are held by the school. **Data Source:** * Financial Controlling, Finance Directorate. NSW Department of Education.
