The\r\nBasin has a surface area of approximately 37 square kilometres discharging through the\r\nSussex Inlet Channel to the Pacific Ocean at Bherwerre Beach. The total catchment area to\r\nthe Pacific Ocean is approximately 327 square kilometres. The Basin itself therefore\r\nrepresents approximately 11% of the total catchment.\r\nA number of properties surrounding the Basin and its tributaries are very low lying and flooding\r\nhas caused damage in the past. Historical flood level data for the more recent significant flood\r\nevents of February 1971 and June 1991 were provided by many residents as part of the St\r\nGeorges Basin Flood Study (September 2001 - Reference 1).\r\nIn the last 30 years the land usage around the Basin has undergone significant changes, from\r\na predominantly rural community, to a community with significant areas of urbanisation. The\r\ntown of Sussex Inlet in particular has undergone massive changes, mainly due to the\r\ndevelopment of the canal estates which commenced in 1971. There has been a significant\r\nincrease in population and a heightened awareness of environmental issues. These changes\r\nhave already affected the Basin and there is the potential for further changes to occur. In view\r\nof these factors it is necessary to define the existing flood problem and carefully manage future\r\ndevelopment on the floodplain.", "num_resources": 1, "num_tags": 0, "organization": {"id": "c656513d-c0ba-4e10-8f4a-eb730b56bd3b", "name": "shoalhaven-city-council", "title": "Shoalhaven City Council", "type": "organization", "description": "Shoalhaven City is located on the south coast of New South Wales, about 160 kilometres south of Sydney.
